Named vs. Floating Licenses

How Named and Floating BIMPulse licenses work, when a license is in use, and how to pick the right mix for your team.

At a glance

BIMPulse has two kinds of license. A Named license is assigned to one person. A Floating license is shared by your team, one active user at a time.

You can buy Named and Floating licenses together in one purchase, so most teams use a mix.

How Named licenses work

A Named license is assigned to one person's email and can be reassigned once every 7 days. That person always has a license waiting for them, however busy the rest of the team is.

  • An owner or admin assigns it from the Team tab with Assign Named. The member's license type then shows as Named User. See Managing Your Team's Seats.
  • Only that person can use it. While they aren't using BIMPulse, the license sits unused; it doesn't go to the Floating pool.
  • It covers one computer at a time. If the same person signs in on a second computer while the first is still running BIMPulse, the second computer uses a Floating license if one is free.
  • After it's assigned, it can't be moved to someone else for 7 days. If you try sooner, the dashboard tells you how many days are left.

How Floating licenses work

A Floating license is shared: install BIMPulse on as many machines as you like, and each license covers one active user at a time. Floating licenses are held in a pool and checked out when someone signs in to BIMPulse in Navisworks.

  • Nobody needs to be assigned. Every member without a Named license draws from the pool, and the Team tab shows their license type as Floating.
  • If you have 3 Floating licenses, any 3 people can use BIMPulse at once. A fourth person sees No seats available in the BIMPulse Account & Options window until someone finishes.

When a license is in use

A license is in use while you're signed in to BIMPulse with Navisworks open. BIMPulse checks in with the license service about once a minute to keep it.

BIMPulse gives the license back when you:

  • Close Navisworks
  • Sign out from Account Settings
  • Switch to a different organization in Account Settings

Opening Navisworks more than once on the same computer still uses just one license.

If Navisworks crashes

BIMPulse can't give the license back if Navisworks closes unexpectedly. The license frees itself within about 10 minutes. If you restart Navisworks on the same computer, you get your license back straight away.

Choosing the right mix

  • Daily coordinators who run clash reviews most days: give each a Named license so they're never left waiting.
  • Occasional users, such as project managers or engineers who check in now and then: share a smaller number of Floating licenses.
  • Not sure yet? Your free 30-day trial includes unlimited licenses of both kinds, so you can see how your team actually uses BIMPulse before you buy.

See Pricing for current prices, billing options, and volume discounts. Volume discounts count Named and Floating licenses together.
